SECRETARY'S NotePad

July 15, 1995

Meeting began at approximately
3:10 P.M.

Members present: Abed Kahale,
Larry Sauter, Bob Swoger, Gary
Lessenberry, Cy Herre, Bobby
Muth, Nazir Pashtoon, John
Donaldson, and Phillip
Kwitkowski

There is going to be a slight
delay in getting the 3.5 inch
disk drives mentioned last
month due to a slight snafu. No
problem, we can wait when the
end result is rewarding.

Hugh Howie sent John Donaldson
a QL disk. John had a hard time
reading because it was a high
density disk. Hugh sent another
disk that John could read and
it was an animation disk from
Toronto made just before the
Toronto club decided to quit
the Sinclair scene. There are
111 variations of screens to
enjoy with the various options.
The program was by and from
Milton Jones using Picture
Master Plus.

Phillip went to a couple of
fests. He just couldn't keep
his hands off of bargains such
as fill up this bag of software
for $5.00.

Marie Kendoll called Bob to say
she couldn't get the VU-Calc to
large printer LogiCall utility
to work. Bob loaded it up and
can not get it to not work. Bob
called her up and suggested she
try VC2TAS.B1 until he find
some remedy for her problem. We
hope she will have success with
Bob's 6.0 version of LogiCall.
{The corrected VC2LP.Bl is in
this issue. Ed.]

A motion was passed making Gary
Lessenberry a lifetime member
of C.A.T.U.G. with all
privileges as such.

George Chambers wife passed
away for which we offer him our
condolences. He offered to send
us his tape and disk collection
for an appropriate fee and will
send us some articles from the
U.K. with the tapes and disks.

Bob is going to call Lee
Thoresen and Mark Dorinson
asking one of them to become
the librarian for our club.
They are not always able to be
contacted on the phone.

Paul Holmgren sent John
Donaldson 9 disks 5.25 inch in
size on the provision that they
be sold for $1.00 each and the
proceeds be put in T/SNUG's
treasury and an article
advertising the sale be put in
ZXir QLive Alive! pages. A
small accounting of the sale of
the disks was included in the
letter.

Abed has the master copies of
Sinc Link for inclusion in some
body's library. It looks like
John will take custody of the
Sinc-Link masters.

The meeting was adjourned at
3:43 P.M.

August 19,1995

Because of many activities
including preparation for the
Dayton ComputerFest, there was
no August meeting.

QXL NOTES ‘95

by
Al Feng

As of the beginning of July,
the QKL's operating system
(SMSQ) is at v2.57. The
enclosure noted that the SDATE
function now returns the proper
date if input by the user. In
previous versions, I observed
that some Strings were
prematurely truncated; and,
though this is not mentioned as
being corrected, it has been.

The video remains diminutive,
though I recall that there was
a note included with the
distribution suggesting that
the documentation on the
pointer environment be
consulted (Oh, really!?!).

The TURBO compiler still
returns ERRORs when simple BEEP
statements are included, among
others.

DISK TAGs

There is a new feature starting
(and, hopefully ending!) with
SMSQ v2.57 -- DISK TAGs (my
designation). The TAG consists
of an additional label to the
file header which identifies
any valid, physical medium in
the system with either "QDOS"
or "MSDOS" followed by the
medium's density (DD HD ED).
This is either a blessing or a
curse, depending on your point
of view. The observant reader
will note that "ED" disks are
identifiable. I don't know if
this is a carryover from SMSQ/E
for the SUPER GOLD CARD, or if
you can actually read/write to
ED drives with a QXL. Of
course, the latter would
suggest a new, QXL-only, ED
format since 2.88 meg capacity
is NOT compatible with the
(SUPER) GOLD CARD's 3.2 meg
capacity.

One of the things that I really
don't like about the TAG is

that it gives a spurious label
to the QXL's WIN()_ drives. The
WIN()_ drives are tagged with
"DD" since a separate provision
was not made for WIN()_ drives
such as "WD". Clearly, the
operating system is looking for
the "next" highest TAG, and
failing to find one, it cycles
back to the next possible
option (i.e., DD). This will
surely be "corrected" with the
next release.

While the TAG may seem like a
clever idea, in practice you
will NOT find it difficult to
quickly differentiate between
directories unless you suddenly
get into the strange habit of
using the "dot" delimiter for
EVERYTHING instead of the
"underscore" that QDOS uses.

In an effort to "eliminate" the
spurious "DD" tag on my QXL
WIN()_ drives, I did try
reformatting one of my
partitions under the new SMSQ
just in case there was a change
in the FORMAT routine. The
spurious label remained.

Consequently, the new versions
of QLAMBer and QLUMSi have been
re-coded to ELIMINATE the TAG.

TASKMASTER and QRAM
From what I can tell,
TASKMASTER can NOT be run on a
QXL. While there are some
advantages to TASKMASTER over
QRAM, I have always found the
‘CTRL C(ascading)' toggle a
much more convenient way to
TASK Switch QDOS programs; and,
QRAM's core code is bundled
with the SMSQ operating system.
Having said that, there was a
query I read somewhere that I
wish to address regarding
bypassing the TASKMASTER's DATE
setting routine [relevant to
(SUPER) GOLD CARD users]. The
key to bypassing TASKMASTER's
DATE setting routine is to
avoid it. Now that probably
sounds "stupid", since that is
precisely what those who are
encountering THAT screen are
trying to do.

So, how do you avoid the DATE
setting routine?

Of course it was an accident
that I discovered the solution
to this vexing problem. In
fact, I was perplexed the first
time I loaded TASKMASTER and
the DATE setting routine did
NOT appear! A quick examination
of the disk's DIRectory
revealed the answer. If you
look at the "Super_Boot" you
will see that there are two
related files: Last_Time &
Set_Time.

So, the simple solution is to
DELETE or RENAME (suggested)
the two related files from your
start_up disk and TASKMASTER
will progress to its next
phase. Now, I have to admit
that I have some START_UP disks
where this works, and other
disks where TASKMASTER balks at
loading. I haven't investigated
why this happens; so, this may-
or-may-not work for you.

SMSQ WIN(). CORRUPTION

I had previously related an
earlier-and-recurrent problem
which I had thought might have
been the result of my mis-use
ef the FDREAD and FORMAT
programs (C. Hochstaetter) in
concert with earlier versions
of SMSQ. This might have been
the case, but I now suspect
that the problem lies
elsewhere.

I have to say that this might
be due to the SuperStor Data
Compression, so I made
contemporaneous backups of ALL
the files, and then re-
FORMATted the partition, re-
compressed the drive, and they
replaced the files from the
tape that I had.

I then decided that the size
allocation was larger than it
had to be, so I re-FORMATted
the WIN2_16 from the original
24 Megs. This house-keeping
should have solved the problem;
but, after some time, the WIN2_
became corrupted, AGAIN!

Well, AFTER the third re-
FORMAT, I finally noticed that
my WIN2_ drive had an “out-of-
balance" sector count --
something like 51226/32768.

The problem is that the QXL.WIN
file on DRIVE D: was still the
original size! Oy! I cannot say
exactly when this sector
imbalance transpired. It may
have become imbalanced
immediately after the QDOS re-
FORMAT to a smaller size; or,
it may have occurred sometime
thereafter. Either way, I might
have noticed this sooner, if
the net viewing area on a
"regular" VGA monitor was
larger than 9.5" diagonally.

So, the process was the same as
previously noted:

1) determine which is the
"last" readable file;

2) WCOPY all "good" files to
another medium

3) exit to DOS

4) delete QXL.WIN from the
associated DOS directory

NOTE: make sure you are in the
proper drive for the particular
WIN()_

WIN1_ is on C:
WIN2_ is on D:
WIN3_ is on E:
WIN4_ is on F:
et cetera

5) return to SMSQ
6) FORMAT WIN()_megabytes_size

7) WCOPY files from your backup
back to WIN2_ When in doubt,
transfer files to a floppy disk
since the WIN()_ might hang up
on a "bad" file.

I was going to say that I
hadn't had a recurrence of the
WIN()_ corruption; but, a
READ/WRITE problem did crop up
a week ago when I got a "medium
full" message with about 12 meg

of free space available. I'll
keep you posted.

HAPPY TRAILS, AND COMPUTING, TO

VU-CALC TO LARGE PRINTER
BUG FIX

by
Bob Swoger

[Marie Kendoll of ZX-Appeal
wrote asking me to look into
the VC2LP.B1 program used to
obtain large printer output of
VU-CALC files. She found the
program crashed when the
spreadsheet was used vertically
instead of horizontally. This
not only inspired a fix but
also this article.]

One of the many wonderful
things about the TS2068 is that
there has been so much written
to inform the user how to use
all the features and
capabilities. The manual for it
is more informative than
Manuals I've seen for other
brands. The way the memory is
mapped makes programming a
pleasure. The system ROM is
located between 0 to 16383. The
rest of space up to 65535 is
RAM. Moving RAMTOP down to hide
machine code is done by simply
giving the command CLEAR
followed by the address of the
last byte of RAM you wish the
computer to know about.

The TS2068 manual tells us that
if we want to display something
on the screen, we just POKE
something into the RAM space
between address 16384 ( 16 X
1024 ) and 23296 ( 16384 + 6912
) or print something to one of
768 screen locations.

Because TASWORD TWO is more
like a line editor than a word
processor, every character and
space displayed on the screen
is stored in predictable RAM
locations. With the use of
HEADER.B1 by Nazir Pashtoon for
tape and Disk Doctor by George
Chambers we find that the start
address for TASWORD documents

33280. This is the address of
the first character on the top
left most character on the
screen.

If we do not enter printer
controls into a TASWORD TWO
document, the location of each
character printed on paper and
screen is easily located in
RAM. If we want to see the text
just entered into TASWORD TWO,
we know to look for as much as
300 lines of 64 characters per
line starting at address 33280
in RAM. Since 300 lines of 64
characters is 19200 bytes ( 300
* 64 ), the last character
would be at address 52479 (
33279 + 19200 ). The sixth
character on the fifth line
would be at location 33541
found by: 33279 + (4*64)+ 6 =
33541

The following short program
will display the first 10 lines
of a TASWORD TWO named
wpfile.ct to the screen just as
it appeared on the screen when
you typed it into TASWORD in
the 32 column mode:

10 RANDOMIZE USR 100: LOAD "wp
file.Ct" CODE 33280

20 FOR I=33280 to (33279+(10*6
4))

30 PRINT CHRS PEEK I, 40 NEXT I

THIS WON'T WORK VERY WELL WITH
MSCRIPT BECAUSE MSCRIPT LINES
ARE OF INDETERMINATE LENGTH.

Now suppose you wanted to print
out a portion of a VU-CALC
spreadsheet to a large printer.
Each VU-CALC cell is seven
characters wide. There are 50
cells across. The address of
the first character in the
first cell is 34567. The
address of the last character
in the last cell in the first
row is (34567 + (50 X 7)) or
34567 + 350. Since there are 50
rows, the last byte in the VU-
CALC file is 50 * 350 or 17500
+ 34567 or 52067.

As you can see, we can use
simple calculations to locate
where each byte of a VU~CALC

file and each byte of a TASWORD
TWO file resides in RAM. Armed
with this knowledge, we can
write a program to move VU-CALC
cell information directly to a
Large Printer or into a TASWORD
TWO file for further
formatting.

Since the large printer can
print only 10 columns with
reasonable left and right
margins rather than all 50
columns across the page, VC2LP
asks you to choose the left
most column to be printed. It
then prints that column and the
next 9 and all 50 rows below.

TASWORD, being capable of 64
characters in a row, allows us
to load 9 VU-CALC columns ( 9 X
7 = 63 ) into a TASWORD Two
file using vVC2TAS. The added
advantage of doing this before
printing is that the file can
now be modified further for
better readability of the
spreadsheet. Since many of our
spreadsheet applications don't
require all nine columns there
is usually room to improve the
appearance of the printout by
moving the columns apart and
using complete words for
headings rather than being
limited to 7 characters.

The two programs, VC2LP.B1 and
VC2TAS.B1, are both provided as
part of the LogiCall ensemble
of programs available from
Mechanical Affinity and RMG for
$15, their listings are
provided below using $C2TAS.B1
described in the last issue of
Khite-Times News so that the
listing will appear on your
screen exactly as you see it
here in print with no errors.

Thanks to Marie Kendoll for
letting this writer know of a
bug in an earlier version of
VC2LP.B1
